Bettina Allamoda. Spandex Studies

Universal Dekorationsständer. 2013, hot dipped galvanized steel,
polyester spandex foil, vitrine, motor-disc, Display Window
Installations on Jewish Life at Kurfürstendamm 1933-1945, Berlin

“Allamoda’s approach to textiles…derives from the material as a surface which is suitable for spatial, structural, architectural and aesthetic/artistic references and figurations because of its malleability (which is the result of weaving and especially the technical innovations which make materials tear-resistant, i.e. elastic, but these factors are not foregrounded as aspects of production). The fundamental issue posed in Allamoda’s work is how material behaves in space as a zone which is defined by effect and counter-effect and which is conceived as a realm of contention, as opposed to merely being an empty container. Here, material is tested for how the tension and compression of forces delineate what affects it and also what it affects. Or, vice versa, how the space as a zone of such contention becomes visible. (After all, it’s also about looks).” - from Stresstest, by Philipp Ekardt.
