Work to do!: Selbstorganisation in prekären Arbeitsbedingungen

Held in 2007/2008 in the Shedhalle, Zurich, the project sereis Work to do! Self-Organisation in Precarious Working Conditions explored the dynamics, emancipatory moments and self-empowerment potentials as well as the paradoxes and problems of self-organisation. The starting point of the research investigations and projects was the change taking place in working relations and their organisational structures as well as the specific context of ‘Zurich’ itself.
The participating artists have selected excerpts and examples from a wealth of visual and text material and proposed their individual arrangement; functioning much like storyboards, the aim of these presentations is to illustrate the process of project realisation. Texts by the curators, which together with the interim stages appeared in the issues of the Shedhalle Newspaper published parallel, comment on the knowledge and research prcoeses as well as the conditions of production. Selected essays, accounts of Skype Meetings, to which issues of self-organisation led, self-portrayals of self-organised initiatives in Zurich we visited, and descriptions of films, chosen by Madeleine Bernsdorf and Frederikke Hansen, which looks into forms of self-organisation and were screened in the Shedhalle, also comment on and extend the range of perspectives.
