OASE 121. Architects Think Furniture

Witnessing and responding to social change, twentieth-century architecture saw many architects move across all levels of practice, from urban scale to everyday objects. Some furniture emerged as part of larger architectural projects, while other pieces were conceived as independent, functional artifacts for daily life. OASE 121 explores why architects think about, design, and make furniture, and how this activity shapes architectural culture. It combines theoretical research on the role of furniture within architectural practice and discourse with close, focused studies of architects for whom furniture design has become a central part of their oeuvre. Together, these perspectives reveal furniture’s importance.
