Appointed Habitus Set
Appointed Habitus Set presents three recent work groups by Katja Eydel. Rather than a catalogue, this publication translates these projects for the page to reveal the larger arc of Eydel’s work over the last decade: a sustained investigation into the contemporary logics of photographic representation.
Each of the original projects was based on extensive research into particular genres of commercial photography: Habitus (2012) drew on images from online retailers of Christian liturgical clothing; Appointed (2016) was derived exclusively from images in paid-for announcements for contemporary art projects on e-flux; and for Set (2020), Eydel rephotographed the packaging of children’s clothing. Assembled and juxtaposed, these three projects – each processing a different body of found images – constitute together a ruthless taxonomy of our commodified digital imaginary.
All three projects have been reconceived and reformatted for this large-format publication. They are accompanied by a newly commissioned text by Mike Sperlinger which explores digital photography’s relationship to language, belief and commerce.
