Das ETH Studio Basel, eine renommierte Lehr- und Forschungsstätte auf dem Gebiet der Raum- und Stadtplanung, analysiert unter anderem in der breit angelegten Studie Die Schweiz – Ein städtebauliches Porträt die urbanistische Entwicklung an diversen Orten Europas. Einer der Schwerpunkte war Belgrad, die politische, wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Hauptstadt Serbiens, und die Entwicklung in den Jahren seit dem internationalen Embargo gegen die Regierung Milosevic. Exemplarisch kann hier die Spannung zwischen traditioneller Stadt und globalen Handlungsmustern aufgezeigt werden.
Dieses fundiert illustrierte Buch fasst die umfangreichen Forschungsergebnisse zusammen, weist nach, wie sich Belgrad in diesen Umbruchjahren verändert hat und fokussiert insbesondere auf das Zusammenspiel von gelenktem und zufälligem Städtebau, das heisst, auf diejenigen Situationen, wo «wilde Siedlungen» und städtische Infrastrukturbauten aufeinandertreffen. Belgrad ist damit ein Beispiel für Städtebau unter den globalisierten Bedingungen der heutigen Zeit.

ETH Studio Basel, an institute of urban research, undertakes projects that explore the evolution of the contemporary city, looking specifically at how cities transform over time and interact with material space. Belgrade. Formal / Informal presents the fascinating findings of ETH Studio Basel’s research in the former Yugoslavian and now Serbian capital, investigating in particular the city’s development following the international embargo against the Milosevic regime after the Yugoslavian wars of separation in the 1990s until the present day.
