Andreas Broeckmann. The Making of Les Immatériaux

Book presentation: Andreas Broeckmann in conversation with Beatrice von Bismarck

The exhibition Les Immatériaux was presented at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1985, exactly 40 years ago. Curated by the philosopher Jean-François Lyotard and design theoretician Thierry Chaput, it is widely regarded as a landmark in the history of postmodern philosophy, as well as for discourses around art, science and digital culture.
The new book by Andreas Broeckmann, The Making of Les Immatériaux, provides the first comprehensive account of the preparations of this complex and interdisciplinary project, detailing how the exhibition emerged from collaborations in such diverse fields as contemporary art, architecture, science, and network media.

Andreas Broeckmann is a Visiting Professor in the PhD Program at Malmö Art Academy, and teaches at the HGB/ Academy of Fine Arts, Leipzig. He is a private lecturer at Leuphana University Lüneburg where since 2014 he has conducted an extensive research and documentation project about Les Immateriaux. He is the author of Machine Art in the Twentieth Century (MIT-Press, 2016), and co-editor of 30 Years After Les Immatériaux (with Yuk Hui, Meson Press, 2015).
Beatrice von Bismarck was professor at the HGB/ Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig where she taught Art History and Visual Culture and initiated the MA program, Cultures of the Curatorial. In her publication, The Curatorial Condition (Sternberg Press, 2022), she discusses the curatorial as a domain of practice and meaning with its own conditions, rules, and procedures, to which both human and nonhuman agents contribute.

The presentation will be held in English.
