Envisioning Vocational Rehabilitation

"Vocational rehabilitation" ist ein Begriff, der sich im Englischen auf soziale Eingliederungsmaßnahmen aus einer Arbeitsunfähigkeit heraus bezieht. Dieses soziale Aufgabenfeld ist Ausgangspunkt der Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem in Berlin lebenden Künstler Simon Denny und der neuseeländischen Wissenschaftlerin Joanna Fadyl.
Vor dem Hintergrund seines künstlerischen Interesses an Themen der Freizeitkultur, Unterhaltungsindustrie (Video, Fernsehen) und der Ästhetik einer inflationären Informationsökonomie widemt sich Denny für das gemeinsame Projekt der Funktion von Informationsdesign. Das Projekt besteht in der Aufarbeitung des visuellen Materials der Studie Fadyls zur historischen Entwicklung der Definition und Rolle beruflicher Wiedereingliederungsmaßnahmen. In einer Broschüre fassen Denny und der in Amsterdam lebende Designer David Bennewith beispielhafte  Dokumente aus der Sozialgeschichte Neuseelands zusammen.
Diese Broschüre ist strukturell an Facebooks neuer Timeline und Edward Tuftes Auseinandersetzungen mit der Visualisierung von Informationen orientiert. Die Faltung und eine Reihe von Ausklappelementen, die wie Einschübe funktionieren, reagiert auf zeitgenössische Vorstellungen des (digitalen) Archivs und übersetzt es zurück in den dreidimensionalen Raum. Die Bröschüre funktioniert ausdrücklich auch als visuelles Hilfsmittel für Fadyls Dissertation und wird auch in diesem Zusammenhang vertrieben.

Vocational rehabilitation is a term that refers to a process of compelling and enabling people to overcome disability so they can work. This social practice is the starting point for a collaboration between the Berlin-based artist Simon Denny and Joanna Fadyl, a PHD candidate from New Zealand.
For the joint project "Envisaging Vocational Rehabilitation", Denny revisits his artistic interest in topics such as leisure culture, the entertainment industry (video, television) and the aesthetics of an information economy by working with information design. The project consists of a collaborative reorganisation of visual and textual material from Fadyl’s research around the development of the definition and role of reintegration into employment and society. Exemplary documents originating from New Zealand’s social history have been compiled and processed by Denny and the Amsterdam based designer David Bennewith to form a central brochure from where the diverse parts of the project are accessed.
This brochure is structurally informed by Facebook's new timeline protocol and Edward Tufte's notions about the visualisation of information. Its concertina, a series of tipped in fold-outs act like interpolations, alluding to the contemporary (digital) archive, translated back into layered space. The brochure is explicitly designed as a resource for communicating Fadyl's PHD research to the field and further - half of the edition is distributed within this context.
