(NOT A PLACE)
Sally Gutierrez und Alex Villar (New York) diskutieren mit Sabeth Buchmann (Berlin) und Simon Sheik (Kopenhagen)
The purpose of this dialogue is to engage in the ongoing debate about the contemporary conditions for art practices and discourses that involve the articulation of the notion of site. Without wanting to pre-empt the experience or over-determine the framework of discussion, we want to start by suggesting the following pairing: Augé's non-place and Smithson's non-site. Between them, there is a world of theoretical developments, for example from Foucault's Heterotopias to De Certeau's space practices, which Augé directly quotes. Despite the apparent similarity between the non-site and the non-place, the two concepts address completely different phenomena. What this difference speaks of, and which is of relevance to our project, is the departure on the part of artistic practices dealing with space from a focus on analytical matters to an engagement with the social aspects that are present in matters of space.
