Divided We Stand. 9th Busan Biennale 2018

Presentation with curators Cristina Ricupero and Jörg Heiser and artists and participants of the Biennale

The co-curators of the Busan Biennale 2018, Cristina Ricupero and Jörg
Heiser, in collaboration with Sternberg Press, are happy to announce the
launch of the Biennale’s catalogue Divided We Stand.
With the title Divided We Stand, the theme of the Busan Biennale 2018 in
South Korea was that of divided territories, reflected in the work of
artists from around the world. Torn apart are not only territories –
nations, or formerly ethnically connected regions, usually by war,
colonization and/or hostile estrangement – but also, importantly,
psyches.
We asked ourselves: What sorts of sentiments and types of conditioning
does the splitting of territories induce in people’s minds, in a general
sense, and specifically in the minds of artists? Vice versa, what kinds
of mindsets induce the splitting in the first place?
With contributions from sixty-six artists from thirty-four countries,
and organized by the curatorial team of Cristina Ricupero and Jörg
Heiser along with guest curator Gahee Park within just seven months, the
guidebook to the Biennale was produced in time for the Biennale’s
opening. However, a more substantial catalogue was needed.
That catalogue is finally available. It includes in-depth essay
contributions from Boris Groys, Mohammed Hanif, Heonik Kwon, Nina Power,
Hito Steyerl, and Wladimir Velminski. Designed by Anna Haas, and edited
by Jörg Heiser and Cristina Ricupero along with Gahee Park and managing
editor Young-jun Tak. The publication includes a comprehensive section
on each artist’s contribution (with texts from the editors and Mitch
Speed), and of course, installation shots of the exhibition at the
Cold-War-themed Museum of Contemporary Art in Busan, and the
science-fiction-themed building of the former Bank of Korea.
After a short introduction by Cristina Ricupero and Jörg Heiser,
numerous artists and participants of the Biennale will contribute to a
lively discussion, offering insights into the processes and the artistic
experiences connected to the Biennale and its theme.
